ORIENTATION EVENT, TRAINING TOOLS, AND FIRST AID KITS DISTRIBUTED BY IPRT IN HARGEISA TO SMALL AND MEDIUM-SIZED ENTERPRISE (SME) OWNERS AFFECTED BY THE CATASTROPHIC WAAHEEN MARKET FIRE

On March 30th, 2023, the Institute for Practical Research and Training (IPRT) organized an orientation event in Hargeisa at Abarso Tech University as part of their comprehensive training program to support small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) owners affected by the devastating Waaheen Market fire. The event aimed to provide essential information and guidance to help the victims cope with the training and become fully aware of the program's approach and purpose. The destructive fire that engulfed the Waaheen Market left many SME owners in a state of despair. In response to this tragedy, IPRT took swift action to extend a helping hand to these affected individuals. Recognizing the importance of equipping them with the necessary skills and resources, it organized an orientation event in Hargeisa. After the orientation event, a comprehensive training program was implemented to specifically equip the victims with the essential skills and knowledge required to rebuild their businesses and progress forward. This initiative was a crucial and much-needed support system for those affected by the devastating fire. The primary objective of the project was to illuminate how it would enhance the income-generating activities of 73 participants, consisting of 57 women and 16 men, whose businesses were tragically destroyed in the Waaheen Market fire. The training took place over a span of ten days, from March 30th to April 10th. It covered a wide range of topics, including fundamental business management principles, basic accounting principles, fire safety instructions, and first aid training. These sessions were led by seasoned professionals, such as Abdirahman Osman Jama, who served as the leader of the business course, and his assistant, Fathia Mohamed Dirie. Additionally, a team from the Somaliland National Fire (AND) the fire fighting training, while Abdikhadar Rashid Kulmiye, provided valuable insights and guidance to the participants the first aid usage. By offering this support, IPRT aims to empower SME owners to overcome the challenges they face and emerge stronger than ever. It understands the vital role these businesses play in the local economy and is committed to assisting them in their recovery journey. The impact of this program was truly significant. Participants reported feeling a newfound sense of confidence and empowerment to rebuild their businesses. They expressed their deep gratitude for the support provided by the United States African Development Foundation (USADF) through the Institute for Practical Research and Training (IPRT) initiative. Thanks to this support, they were able to secure grants that enabled them to restart their businesses. Overall, this training program not only equipped participants with essential knowledge and skills but also instilled in them a renewed sense of hope and determination
